Union Minister Jitendra Singh announces India’s bio-economy is set to reach one trillion dollars by 2047, highlighting rapid growth from 10 billion dollars in 2014 to over 165 billion today, alongside the BioE3 Policy and India’s expanding technological capabilities.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Friday asserted that the 21st century will belong to India, projecting the country’s bio-economy to reach one trillion dollars by 2047. Addressing an international conference hosted by Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee through a virtual platform, the Minister emphasized India’s rapid advancement toward comprehensive technological capability spanning diverse domains.

Dr. Singh stated that India is progressing decisively across the entire spectrum of science and innovation, describing the nation’s capabilities as extending “from gene to qubit, from ocean depths to outer space.” He underlined that the country’s development trajectory is rooted in a civilisational ethos that balances economic growth with ethical values.

Highlighting key policy initiatives, the Minister referred to the BioE3 Policy—Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment—approved in 2024. He noted that the policy serves as a cornerstone for strengthening the biotechnology sector while simultaneously addressing environmental sustainability and employment generation.

Providing data on sectoral growth, Dr. Singh said India’s bio-economy has witnessed a remarkable expansion from 10 billion dollars in 2014 to over 165 billion dollars at present. He further outlined the government’s target of achieving a 300 billion dollar bio-economy by 2030, positioning the sector as a critical driver of national growth in the coming decades.
